Why Dogs are a First Responder's Best Friend

First responder and veteran, Jim Corbett discusses the emotional impact a dog can have on a veteran/first responder's life. Having visited with working dog teams across the country and overseas, Jim shares his personal story as well as stories of the profound bond between K9 and handler, to include the impact dogs have when managing post-traumatic stress and the grieving process. 

Learning Objectives: After the session, participants will gain a better understanding of the emotional impact K9s can have on first responders, handlers and their families, as well as departments and the immediate community. Participants will gain insight into how bonds are formed, as well as the emotional impact a K9 can have with first responders who have experienced a traumatic incident and or loss. 

Explination is provided as to how exposure to life saving traumatic events, and resulting post traumatic stress impacts their long-term mental health and physical well-being. Resilience and stress mitigation strategies are also discussed.

Speaker Biography:

James Corbett is a nationally recognized photographer, who has captured and documented the stories of working dogs and first responders throughout the U.S. as well as overseas. Mr. Corbett's primary focus is researching and documenting the human-animal bond, as well as the traumatic and emotional effects first responders and their K9s face throughout their careers.

By conveying his personal story and through his documentary work, Mr. Corbett continues to raise the importance of mental health awareness among veterans and first responders, to include promoting the health and wellness of working dogs. Mr. Corbett currently serves as a first responder and works as a behavioral profiler. Prior to his behavioral work, Mr. Corbett worked as a police officer and served in both the US Air Force and US Army.
